F.R. - FREERIDE or FREERIDING is all about fun. A typical ride would involve a more chilled out approach than your average X.C. ride and the focus would be to find some steep, fast, jumpy downhill sections to 'let go' on!
Freeriding encompasses the more adrenalin fuelled experiences of mountain biking and includes the specific disciplines of DOWNHILL, DIRT JUMPING and SLOPE STYLE. Bike Parks are rare in the UK at the moment but Freeride areas are becoming more popular and should start to feature more and more as the sport progresses.
Freeride mountain bikes are designed to handle more agressive riding than X.C. bikes and are always full suspension. A Freeride mountain bike will usually have between 5" and 6" of travel and will have what is referred to as a 'slacker' geometry which simply means that the rider's weight will be positioned towards the rear of the bike. As Freeride mountain bikes need to be structurally stronger than X.C. bikes, they will be heavier. Downhill mountain bikes are heavier still, for extra, extra strength and have between 8" and 10" of travel. Dirt Jump bikes are small framed, hard-tail or full suspension bikes that are specifically designed to perform aerial tricks and handle heavy impact landings.
